This kind of performance reminds you just how great these sonatas truly are. While the beginning of Sonata 1 doesn’t sound too promising, after a minute or so the duo’s juices start flowing, and the remainder of the recital is captivating. Vidor Nagy is new to me. Not that he is a fresh young talent. This recording was originally issued in 1986, and Nagy was born in Budapest in 1942 and is the principal violist of the Württemberg State Orchestra of the Suttgart Opera. A musician of his talent deserves more exposure, and I hope to hear more from him. While Nagy doesn’t have Pinchas Zukerman’s voluptuous tone or spit-polish technique, not can he probably afford a viola like Zukerman’s Guarnierius. Unlike Zukerman, Nagy excels in piano and pianissimo passages, and he finds shades and colors a low dynamics that elude Zukerman.
His partner, Carmen Piazzini, is a fine and musical a pianist as Nagy is a violist. She plays like an equal and doesn’t keep in the background. In fact, she sometimes overpowers Nagy, but I am much more willing to forgive over-assertiveness than reticence. Also, the sound is not as transparent and present as it is on Zukerman’s RCA CD (Sept/Oct 1994). I believe that is unavailable, so if you are looking for a first-rate recording of the sonatas, you can pick this one up with confidence.

Diese Art Aufführung erinnert einen daran, wie großartig die Sonaten in Wirklichkeit sind. Während der Anfang der ersten Sonate nicht allzu viel versprechend klingt, beginnen nach etwa einer Minute die Lebenssäfte des Duos zu fließen und der Rest des Konzerts ist fesselnd. Vidor Nagy ist mir neu. Er ist nicht unbedingt ein frisches, junges Talent. Diese Aufnahme stammt ursprünglich aus dem Jahre 1986 und Nagy ist 1942 in Budapest geboren und ist erster Bratschist des Württembergischen Staatsorchesters der Stuttgarter Oper. Ein Musiker mit seinem Talent verdient es, noch mehr herausgestellt zu werden und ich hoffe noch mehr von ihm zu hören. Nagy hat zwar nicht Pinchas Zukermans sinnlichen Ton oder die hochglanzpolierte Technik und kann sich auch wahrscheinlich keine Guarnieri wie Zukerman leisten. Dennoch, anders als Zukerman zeichnet sich Nagy in Piano- und Pianissimo-Abschnitten aus, und er findet Schattierungen und Klangfarben im unteren Dynamikbereich, die Zukerman entgehen.
Seine Partnerin Carmen Piazzini ist als Pianistin genau so feinsinnig und musikalisch wie Nagy als Bratschist. Sie spielt als Gleichberechtigte und hält sich nicht im Hintergrund. Tatsächlich übertrumpft sie Nagy manchmal, aber ich bin viel eher gewillt, zu viel Selbstbewusstsein zu verzeihen als Zurückhaltung. Auch ist der Klang nicht so durchsichtig und präsent wie auf Zukermans CD … Ich glaube, jene (Zukermans CD) ist nicht lieferbar. Wenn Sie also nach einer erstklassigen Aufnahme der Sonaten suchen, können Sie diese getrost zur Hand nehmen.
